Cobblestone Creek Winter Greens Policy & Procedure
Purpose or Reasoning
The closing and covering of new greens is absolutely required. Many factors went into choosing the new grass to be used on the greens; an ultra dwarf bermuda grass was chosen for its quality of putting surface while being tolerant of summer heat and drought. The down side is the need to cover and close the greens during extreme cold. This will minimize the risk of winter kill that many of us see in our yards and on the golf course tees and fairways each spring. Contributing factors to winter kill are mowing height, traffic, sub-freezing temperatures, late establishment of turf, and shaded areas. There are a few others but these are the ones we are extremely concerned with when it comes to protecting the greens.
Closing of greens
This will occur anytime there is a forecast of temperatures falling below 32 degrees (air temperature, not wind-chill) for any extended amount of time (more than a couple of hours). Also because the process of covering the greens will take up to 2 hours, the course will have to close no later than 3:00pm or two (2) hours prior to a drop in temperature.
Reopening of greens
Due to the time and labor required to uncover and recover the greens, reopening of the greens will occur when temperatures are to exceed 32 degrees for a prolonged period of time. It will require a realistic opportunity for golfers to play. The daytime high temperatures will need to exceed 40 degrees and the morning low temperatures will need to remain above 32 degrees for a few consecutive days.
